It is time again for one of the fastest most popular late season Ironman events! This year, the Animals, Scotty and Carrie, will be racing along with Vichy winner Diana Reisler. Diana had a great result in Vichy winning the European Championships in the process overcoming a tough injury mid-season. We expect Diana to have another great race showing off her strong bike and run legs. In addition, Carrie is coming off her win at Challenge Penticton, where Scotty had an amazing day as well nabbing 2nd.
It should be flat and fast racing as usual in north Florida. The day starts with a wetsuit swim, moves onto a flat loop bike course that may have some wind for the athlete to battle, and finishes with a flat fast run. The weather can be very pleasant but some years has been quite cool.
Diana told us:
"After Vichy I made a short break and then got back into training. Had some really good training weeks behind me. Spent a few days in Mallorca and then flew over to Florida. The course is flat - and it will depend a lot on the wind. The field is crazy: 40 women an 80 men! Miranda, Yvonne, Bek Keat, Erika and many more really good women are here.
Hope to show a solid race and that I can compete with the other girls.
Then I need a quick recovery and do my main race here in the US: IM Arizona.
Weather forecast is jumping up and down. It should be fine, but the night before and the race morning they predict heavy rain. We have to wait..."
Carrie reported in to say:
It's funny because last year I said I would not race Florida this year. But as it turns out, I have plans for an Ironman in January that will kick start my 2014 season and Florida will give me the boost I need to prepare for the next Ironman. Florida always attracts a strong professional field, with a handful of girls coming off Kona, and another handful of international girls who are just as fit and looking for a fast race. The weather is Florida at this time of year is great as well which also attracts many people. It is hard for me to keep the motivation going at this time. I am in better shape this year for this race, and placing top 5 is a good result for me.
Scott told us:
"Racing IM FL for the 4th time, I have finished 100+, 11th, 8th, and 3rd, so I hope to continue to climb the ladder! Panama City is one of my favorite places in the world and i am looking forward to a stellar day! The training Carrie and I have been doing in CA could not have gone any better and I feel I am prepared to run a p.b. marathon off the bike but most importantly I am ready to fight for a spot on the podium! It will also be a special weekend for me as my development athlete Brad Williams who has been on a tear this 2nd half of the season will be staying with us and racing as well! We look forward to an action packed weekend that will finish our 2013 season with smiles across the board!"
